The Hoopoe
Magnolia

I was sitting in the Mosswood park
watching a blooming magnolia resplendent
against blue tarp covering a construction site
Up and down the structure went the elevators
one of which had an American flag affixed at the top
I was wondering who would win
the magnolia or the construction
As if they were in conflict
As if there was a war
I thought of Kerouac and Ginsberg
watching a dusty sunflower together
I wished I were not alone,
my famished soul devouring the trees in sight,
I could feel the war inside of me,
and I knew, for now,
the magnolia has won the battle,
but the war is far from over.
